Relocation plan outlines phased move and Cypress asset sale

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has announced plans to relocate its U.S. subsidiary’s headquarters operations from Cypress, California, to Kennesaw, Georgia, setting a multi-year transition that is scheduled to run from the end of 2026 through the end of 2028. The move includes the sale of all fixed assets owned at the Cypress site, including land, office space and warehouse facilities.

The Cypress campus has served as the headquarters for Yamaha’s U.S. group for roughly five decades. Yamaha Motor acquired the property in 1978 and established offices there in 1979. The company has said the relocation is intended to improve asset efficiency and strengthen profitability in its U.S. business.

Why metro Atlanta: a decades-long shift already underway

The planned headquarters relocation follows earlier consolidation steps that have steadily expanded Yamaha’s footprint in Cobb County and the broader metro Atlanta area. Yamaha’s Marine Business moved to Kennesaw in 1999. Motorsports operations were shifted to Georgia in 2019, a move that further anchored corporate activity near the I-75 corridor.

With those major business units already in Georgia, the Cypress facility has more recently been used primarily for corporate functions and a financial services operation. The announced plan would relocate remaining U.S. headquarters functions to Kennesaw, effectively centralizing a larger share of corporate activity in one region.

Sale-and-leaseback planned to maintain continuity

To avoid operational disruption while personnel and functions transition east, Yamaha plans to use a sale-and-leaseback arrangement for a period after selling the Cypress assets. That structure would allow the company to continue operating from the existing campus for a defined time as the move progresses.

Yamaha has not finalized key transaction details, including the sale price, purchaser, or timing, stating those elements remain under review.

Cost pressures and tariffs cited in corporate restructuring

Yamaha has linked the relocation to broader structural reforms aimed at improving profitability in the United States amid rising costs tied to U.S. tariffs and changes in market conditions. The company has described the headquarters move as one component of a wider effort that also includes cross-business cost reduction initiatives.

What is known—and what remains unanswered

  • Confirmed: The relocation is planned to begin at the end of 2026 and conclude by the end of 2028, with fixed assets in Cypress slated for sale.

  • Confirmed: The company intends to use a temporary sale-and-leaseback arrangement to keep operations running during the transition.

  • Unresolved: The number of roles that will relocate, potential hiring in Georgia, and any workforce impacts in California have not been detailed publicly.

The company has framed the move as a measure to improve asset efficiency and enhance profitability in the U.S. market while adapting to cost increases and shifting market conditions.

Yamaha’s parent headquarters remains in Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan. The Kennesaw location is positioned to become the central hub for U.S. headquarters functions once the transition is completed.
