Twelve Midtown residents in Atlantic Station face prolonged outage as utility says grid service is normal

Second morning without electricity for residents in 26-story building
Residents of a 26-story residential high-rise in Atlanta’s Atlantic Station area reported waking up Thursday to a second consecutive day without power, extending an outage that they said began Tuesday night. The disruption is centered at Twelve Midtown, a mixed-use tower on 17th Street in Atlantic Station that includes residential units and hospitality operations.
Video from the scene early Thursday showed most of the building dark, with only isolated lights visible in a handful of units. The length of the outage raised practical concerns for residents typical of extended electricity loss in high-rise settings, including elevator availability, HVAC performance, and refrigeration of food and medications.
Utility says issue is not tied to its service
Georgia Power said its systems serving the location were operating properly and confirmed the building’s account was in good standing. The utility indicated the problem did not appear to be related to its delivery of electric service to the property, pointing to the likelihood of an internal building-side electrical issue affecting distribution within the tower.
In high-rise buildings, power loss can result from failures or safety shutdowns involving internal switchgear, building transformers, main breakers, transfer switches, or other components that distribute electricity after it reaches the property. Building-level faults can also lead to partial power loss, intermittent restoration, or extended downtime while equipment is inspected and repaired.
Building response and scope of impact remain unclear
As of early Thursday, building management had not provided a public explanation for the cause of the outage or a timeline for restoration. It was also not immediately clear how many residents were affected, whether the outage included common areas and building systems, or if any portions of the property were operating on generator power.
The Twelve Midtown tower is a 26-story development with approximately 380 residential units, reflecting the scale of potential impact when a single building-wide electrical failure occurs. The property is located at 361 17th Street NW.
What residents typically need during extended high-rise outages
Clear updates on restoration estimates and safety advisories for elevators and stairwells
Information on whether emergency systems and fire/life-safety equipment remain fully functional
Guidance on access controls and lighting in garages, hallways, and entry points
Direction on food safety, medical-device charging, and temporary accommodation options if needed
With the utility reporting normal service to the site, attention is focused on the building’s internal electrical infrastructure and the pace of troubleshooting and repair.
Further updates are expected as building management or emergency officials release additional details on the cause and restoration timeline.
