Three people killed as Woodsong Way apartment fire leaves dozens displaced in Cobb County overnight
Late-night blaze in Smyrna prompts rescues, hospitalizations and an ongoing investigation
Three people died and dozens of residents were forced from their homes after a late-night apartment fire tore through a building in Cobb County, authorities said Monday.
Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday to the 500 block of Woodsong Way at the Concord Crossing apartment community in Smyrna. On arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from a second-floor apartment, with flames extending upward and threatening units on the floor above. Witnesses at the scene reported that people were still inside the burning unit, prompting an immediate search-and-rescue operation alongside suppression efforts.
Rescue operation and injuries
During the response, firefighters removed at least six people from the affected apartment and provided emergency care at the scene before transporting them to area hospitals. Officials described the injuries as severe, with at least some victims reported in life-threatening condition. A child was among those transported, and the child was reported to be in cardiac arrest during transport.
In addition to those pulled from the unit, firefighters used ladders to rescue other residents who were stranded on a second-floor balcony as smoke and flames cut off escape routes.
Deaths confirmed; building damage and displacement
Authorities later confirmed three fatalities connected to the fire. Names of the deceased and injured were not released.
The fire caused extensive damage to the building. Officials reported eight apartments were heavily damaged, and a total of 24 units were deemed uninhabitable following the blaze. About 30 residents were displaced.
