What investigators have confirmed so far

A 16-year-old was found with multiple gunshot wounds during a shooting response in metro Atlanta, prompting an ongoing investigation into the circumstances that led to the teen’s death and the events immediately before gunfire erupted.

Authorities have said officers responded to a report of a shooting at a gas station on Ga. 138 in the 300 block of the roadway in Clayton County on Jan. 14, 2025. At the location, police found a 16-year-old who had been shot multiple times in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Arrest and charge filed

In the days following the shooting, investigators identified a suspect and pursued an arrest warrant. A 20-year-old man, Javin Alejandro Fonseca, was booked into the Clayton County jail on Jan. 25, 2025, and listed as facing a malice murder charge in connection with the teen’s death.

Law enforcement statements describe the investigation as relying on witness accounts and subsequent detective work that led to the suspect’s identification. Officials also indicated the suspect had been placed on a “most wanted” list prior to being booked into jail.

Account of events leading up to the shooting

Investigators have released limited details about what occurred in the moments before the gunfire. An incident report cites a witness who said three men were talking at the gas station before they ran, followed by at least three gunshots.

Authorities have also described a possible motive tied to an alleged theft at the scene. In a law enforcement announcement previously released about the case, police said the victim and the victim’s friend stole marijuana from the suspect and ran, after which the suspect allegedly pursued them and shot the victim.

Police have not publicly released the victim’s name, and investigators have not detailed how many shots were fired or whether additional evidence was recovered at the scene.

What remains unclear

  • Whether additional individuals will face charges tied to the confrontation or events at the gas station
  • The full timeline of the suspect’s location and custody process before booking
  • Any forensic findings that may clarify positions, movements, or the sequence of shots

The case remains a homicide investigation. Authorities have not announced a trial date or provided further details about the evidence that will be presented in court.
