Public Notice: State of Emergency and Winter Weather Service Disruptions

Emergency Declaration: Winter Storm Gianna
As of Saturday, January 31, 2026, a State of Emergency remains in effect for all of Fulton County and the City of Atlanta. Governor Brian Kemp issued the executive order in response to Winter Storm Gianna, which is forecast to bring between one and four inches of snow to the metro area throughout the day. Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel as air temperatures remain below freezing, creating hazardous road conditions and the potential for rapid deterioration of local thoroughfares.
Public Facility and Event Cancellations
Due to the inclement weather, the following city and county services are suspended for Saturday, January 31:
- Fulton County Libraries & Animal Shelter: All branches and the county animal shelter are closed today. Online library services remain accessible, and due dates for materials have been extended.
- Education: Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools, and DeKalb County Schools have canceled all weekend extracurricular activities and athletic events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
- Major Attractions: The Georgia Aquarium is closed today. Additionally, the Braves Fest fan event at Truist Park and the Dunwoody Homeowners Association Farmer’s Market have been canceled.
- City Meetings: The public meeting regarding the Chattahoochee Brick Co. and RiverLands site has been postponed to a later date.
Public Health and Safety Advisory
An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the Atlanta region, effective through Sunday. Wind chills are expected to reach the single digits tonight. The Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA) has activated warming centers for residents in need of shelter. Officials advise homeowners to take precautions against bursting pipes by allowing faucets to drip and ensuring exterior pipes are insulated. Additionally, health officials remind the public that flu activity remains widespread and severe; residents are encouraged to seek vaccination if they have not yet done so once travel conditions improve.
Transportation and Infrastructure
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has commenced brine operations on I-285 and major interstates. Motorists are warned that express lanes on I-75 and I-85 may be closed midday depending on snow accumulation. The City of Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) has deployed HERO units to assist stranded motorists, though response times may be delayed due to weather conditions. Residents can report downed trees or road obstructions by calling 311.
