Morning Commute Overview

Atlanta commuters are facing a mix of residual construction delays and significant public transit adjustments this Monday, February 9, 2026. While the morning rush is beginning with mostly clear conditions on the main 75/85 Connector, specialized roadwork and maintenance projects are impacting several key interchanges. Drivers should also be mindful of lingering patches of ice or wet roads following recent winter weather treatments by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) in the metro area.

Major Roadwork and Lane Closures

Several overnight construction projects are scheduled to wrap up by 5:00 AM, but residual delays are expected near the following areas. GDOT has reported several incidents and ongoing maintenance that may affect your drive time:

  • I-85 Southbound: Three right lanes are currently blocked near the I-285 interchange due to urgent pothole repairs. This is expected to cause significant stacking for drivers merging from the northern suburbs.
  • I-285 Southbound: A pothole has also been reported past Cascade Road, blocking the right lane and slowing traffic through South Fulton.
  • I-20 Westbound: The exit ramp to I-75/85 Northbound has seen both lanes blocked for construction overnight. While scheduled to reopen early, commuters should check for lingering cones and equipment.
  • I-85 Northbound: Construction near Virginia Avenue has resulted in two left lanes being blocked, which may impact travelers heading toward Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
  • 75/85 Northbound: Roadwork near Abernathy Boulevard has occupied four right lanes overnight; ensure you move over early to avoid the merge bottleneck.

MARTA Rail and Station Alerts

Public transport users will encounter several service modifications today, particularly at major transfer points. MARTA has issued the following rider alerts:

  • Five Points Station: The East-West center platform is currently open for Southbound transfers ONLY. For Northbound transfers or to exit the station, riders must use the right-hand side in the direction of travel.
  • Single Tracking: MARTA is implementing single tracking from Five Points to Civic Center. All southbound trains will board on the northbound platforms at Five Points, Peachtree Center, and Civic Center.
  • Blue/Green Line Impacts: Single tracking is also in effect from Avondale to Indian Creek. Passengers at Kensington and Indian Creek should board all trains on the westbound platform.
  • Escalator Renovations: Multiple escalators are out of service for repair or renovation at Chamblee, East Lake, Lenox, Lindbergh Center, and Sandy Springs. Commuters requiring elevator access should allow extra time.

For those driving, GDOT encourages the use of the 511 system for real-time updates. Transit riders should check the MARTA On the Go app for the latest bus detour information, particularly for Route 183, which remains on detour due to road conditions on Niskey Lake Road.
