Morning Commute Overview: Ice and Construction

Commuters in the Atlanta metro area and surrounding North Georgia counties should exercise extreme caution this Tuesday morning, February 3, 2026. While major interstates have largely been treated and are beginning to dry, significant icy patches remain on several state routes. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) continues to monitor and treat routes in east-central Georgia, where hazardous conditions persist on secondary roads. Commuters traveling through northern suburbs may encounter impassable stretches on backroads where lingering ice and snow from the weekend storm have not yet melted.

Major Arteries and Regional Roadworks

Beyond the weather-related hazards, several major construction projects are impacting traffic flow today:

  • I-285 Southbound: Expect delays of up to 20 minutes from Bolton Road in Cobb County down to I-20 in Fulton County. Construction crews are conducting lane closures and traffic pacing as part of a long-term interchange reconstruction project.
  • GA-400 Express Lanes: Work continues on the 16-mile express lane expansion. While all lanes are currently open, the highway shoulders remain off-limits from the North Springs MARTA station up to McFarland Parkway, causing minor visual distractions and periodic slowing.
  • State Route Closures: GDOT reports full closures due to icy patches on SR 10 in both directions near Columbus Grande Road, and on SR 13 at Thumon Tanner Parkway. Additionally, emergency maintenance on I-75 Southbound at Mt. Paran Road has blocked the right lane, creating a bottleneck for those entering the city from the north.

Urban Alerts: Filming and MARTA Service

In the city center, commuters will face significant reroutes due to major film production. The filming of the production "Judgment Day" has necessitated the closure and rerouting of traffic along Ponce de Leon Avenue and Peachtree Street from 7:00 AM until 11:00 PM today. MARTA bus routes #2, #50, #51, #102, and #809 are all following detour protocols to navigate around the set.

For rail commuters, MARTA has issued a Rider Alert for the Five Points Station. The East-West center platform remains open for Southbound transfers only. Passengers exiting or transferring Northbound must follow signage to the right-hand side in the direction of travel. Additionally, travelers heading to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport should check their flight status before leaving home; the airport is currently operating under a 6% flight operation reduction due to external regulatory constraints, leading to crowded terminals and increased check-in times.

Local Adjustments

Several regional school districts, including Habersham and White counties, remain closed today due to hazardous road conditions. Others, such as Gilmer and Lumpkin, are operating on a two-hour delay. Drivers are urged to remain patient and avoid unnecessary travel on secondary roads until temperatures rise further this afternoon.
