Filming Detours and Heavy Interchange Work Slow Tuesday Commute

Morning Overview: Frigid Start and Filming Detours
Atlanta commuters are facing a cold Tuesday morning as frigid temperatures continue to impact the metro area. While major interstate arteries are currently moving at typical morning speeds, several significant surface street closures are in place due to extensive film production scheduled throughout the day. Drivers in the Ponce de Leon, North Avenue, and North Highland areas should prepare for localized congestion and significant reroutes as crews occupy key corridors.
Major Roadworks: I-285 and I-20 Construction
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) continues to make progress on the multi-year I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. Following the recent start of bridge beam installations, commuters should remain alert for shifting traffic patterns near the interchange. While the most disruptive lane closures are scheduled for nightly windows between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., ongoing work on Shirley Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive continues to impact local access roads. Additionally, maintenance crews have been active on I-285 southbound past Cascade Road, where lane blockages have been reported earlier this morning. On I-20 westbound, a pothole near Panola Road has been affecting the left lane, resulting in minor rubbernecking and localized slowdowns for those heading toward the Downtown Connector.
MARTA and Transit Alerts: Reroutes and Rail Updates
Public transit users should take note of several service adjustments effective for Tuesday, February 24. MARTA has implemented multiple bus reroutes to accommodate the "Where’s the Smoke" film production. Route #816 (North Highland Avenue) is impacted from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., while Routes #2 (Ponce de Leon Avenue) and #102 (North Avenue) will see diversions starting at 9:00 a.m. and lasting until 11:00 p.m. Furthermore, Route #3 (MLK Jr. Drive/Auburn Avenue) remains on detour through Thursday due to filming activity on Edgewood Avenue.
In rail news, the East-West center platform at Five Points has reopened for normal service, providing a smoother transfer experience for commuters. However, Red Line passengers should be aware that trains are currently operating between North Springs and Lindbergh Center only; a transfer at Lindbergh is required for those traveling toward other Red Line destinations. Finally, the Atlanta Streetcar is currently being replaced by shuttle vans due to a power issue near Auburn Avenue and Peachtree Street at Woodruff Park. MARTA advises all travelers to check the latest schedules and allow at least 15 to 20 minutes of extra travel time this morning.
