Douglas County Sheriff’s Office details fatal Douglasville parking-lot shooting, arrest, and ongoing firearms investigation

Authorities outline timeline from 911 call to arrest
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said a 19-year-old University of West Georgia student was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in a Douglasville parking lot, and a 20-year-old Douglasville man has been arrested on charges including murder.
Deputies responded shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday to a report of shots fired near Central Church Road and Kings Highway. Investigators said the shooting occurred in a parking area behind a Dollar General store. When deputies arrived, they found the victim inside a vehicle; she was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was identified as Lyric Latrice Farley, a Carrollton resident and University of West Georgia student.
Investigators cite prior relationship and meeting after a disagreement
Investigators said evidence gathered during the initial response and follow-up investigation—including witness statements and video from multiple locations—indicated Farley and the suspect knew each other and had a prior personal relationship. Authorities said they believe the two met in the area following a disagreement and that Farley was fatally shot during that meeting. Officials have not described the nature of the relationship.
Traffic stop on Interstate 20 led to arrest, officials say
The sheriff’s office said investigators worked overnight using surveillance footage, investigative leads, and technology to identify and locate the suspect. Authorities said David Mark Anthony Powell was taken into custody without incident at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after a traffic stop on Interstate 20 near Highway 5.
Powell was booked on charges of murder and aggravated assault. Authorities said he was scheduled to make a first court appearance Monday afternoon in Douglas County Superior Court.
Search warrants executed; multiple firearms recovered
As the investigation continued, authorities said search warrants were executed and multiple firearms were recovered. Officials said they are still working to determine whether any of the recovered weapons are connected to the shooting. Investigators also said vehicles believed to be connected to the case were impounded.
