Delta Flight 1992 from Atlanta Diverted to Austin as Unrest Disrupts Travel in Mexico’s Jalisco

Flight diverted as security situation escalates in western Mexico

A Delta Air Lines flight departing Atlanta for Mexico was diverted to Austin on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, as authorities warned of security operations and travel disruptions across several Mexican states. The aircraft, operating as Delta Flight 1992, left Atlanta at 9:43 a.m. Eastern time and landed in Austin at 1:15 p.m., according to flight-tracking data.

Delta said it was monitoring conditions in the region and emphasized that passenger and crew safety guided operational decisions. The airline also posted an advisory warning that travel to, from, or through certain destinations in Mexico’s Jalisco state could be affected by civil unrest, urging travelers to check flight status frequently.

U.S. advisory expands across multiple states and cities

The diversion came amid an emergency security message issued to U.S. citizens in Mexico advising them to shelter in place in specified locations. The advisory cited ongoing security operations, road blockages and criminal activity, and named areas including Jalisco (with Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa), parts of Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León.

Reports from Mexico described vehicles set on fire and road blockades erected in multiple states, a pattern that can quickly disrupt highway movement and airport access. As conditions developed, airline operations in and out of Puerto Vallarta—one of the most heavily trafficked leisure gateways in Jalisco—were affected by cancellations and diversions.

Triggering event: cartel leadership death reported by officials

Mexican military forces said Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes—known as “El Mencho,” the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel—was killed during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on Feb. 22, 2026. Officials said he was wounded during the raid and died during transport. The operation also resulted in additional deaths and arrests, along with the seizure of high-powered weapons.

Authorities reported that the cartel responded with coordinated violence, including roadblocks and vehicle burnings across Jalisco and neighboring states. The events prompted security alerts affecting tourists and residents in several regions, including the Puerto Vallarta area.

What travelers should expect in the near term

  • Airline schedules may change with little notice as carriers assess airport access, local transportation availability and security conditions.

  • Even when flights operate, travelers may face difficulty reaching terminals due to road closures, limited ground transportation and shifting local restrictions.

  • Passengers routed through hubs such as Austin may experience knock-on delays as airlines reposition aircraft and crews.

Delta Flight 1992 departed Atlanta at 9:43 a.m. ET on Feb. 22 and diverted to Austin, landing at 1:15 p.m., amid disruptions tied to unrest in Mexico’s Jalisco state.

Delta did not immediately provide detailed re-accommodation information in the public materials referenced Sunday, while the broader security situation in western Mexico remained fluid.
