Reopening pushed back as final security steps are completed

The Decatur Library, the main branch of the DeKalb County Public Library system, delayed its planned reopening on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, one week after a shooting inside the building led to an extended closure for staff support and a security review.

Library officials had indicated the Sycamore Street branch would resume normal operations on Feb. 9. However, the doors did not open at 9 a.m. as scheduled, with officials citing the need to complete a final element of newly added security before reopening to the public. The branch was expected to open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10.

What happened inside the library on Feb. 2

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Decatur Library at about 5:10 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2. Officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound inside the building. The victim was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where officials said he continued receiving medical care in the days following the incident.

Authorities have said the shooting followed an argument that escalated. Investigators identified 44-year-old Medicus Brown of Decatur as the suspect. Brown was booked into the DeKalb County Jail and faces charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Security assessment and changes underway across the library system

In the days after the shooting, county and library leadership described a dual-track response: addressing employee well-being and reviewing safety procedures at the branch. DeKalb County Police and the library system conducted a security assessment examining building access, layout, and safety protocols, with officials stating that additional measures would be implemented before reopening.

County leaders also pointed to planned systemwide upgrades. In December 2025, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners approved $1.9 million in SPLOST funding to upgrade security camera systems across DeKalb County Public Library locations, including the Decatur branch, with work expected to begin shortly.

Operational impact and near-term expectations

The downtown Decatur branch has been closed since the evening of Feb. 2, affecting normal library services and programming. Some scheduled events were moved offsite during the closure period.

  • Incident date: Feb. 2, 2026, at approximately 5:10 p.m.

  • Planned reopening date delayed: Feb. 9, 2026

  • Expected reopening time: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026

The investigation into the shooting remains with local law enforcement, while the library system’s reopening plan has centered on completing security enhancements and supporting staff following the incident.
