Cumberland Mall to Require Adult Supervision for Minors Saturday After The Battery Teen ‘Takeover’ Arrests

Temporary policy begins Feb. 28 as police monitor online chatter about another large youth gathering

Cumberland Mall in Cobb County will impose a temporary teen curfew on Saturday, Feb. 28, requiring anyone under 18 to be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult age 21 or older after 3 p.m. The mall’s move follows a large, disorderly gathering at The Battery Atlanta last weekend that resulted in multiple arrests and prompted law enforcement to anticipate similar meetups elsewhere.

The mall’s “Parental Guidance Required” program is designed to limit unsupervised youth crowds during peak afternoon and evening hours. Under the policy, security officers will staff entrances starting at 3 p.m. to check identification for visitors who appear to be 17 or younger. Guests who cannot show valid ID proving they are at least 18 must be accompanied by an eligible adult to remain on the property.

  • Applies to visitors under 18 after 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28
  • Supervising adult must be 21 or older and remain with the youth group
  • One adult may supervise up to four minors

The policy was announced as a precaution after online posts circulated promoting a potential “takeover” gathering at Cumberland Mall for Saturday evening. Police in Cobb County said they are aware of the social media activity and intend to position resources to monitor crowds and respond quickly if disorder develops.

The immediate backdrop is the incident at The Battery Atlanta on Saturday, Feb. 21, where authorities said a crowd of more than 100 youths converged after online promotion, creating disturbances that required a multi-agency response. Cobb County police reported 17 arrests tied to the event, involving both adults and juveniles. Police said eight adults were booked into the Cobb County Jail on charges that included inciting to riot, loitering and prowling, and obstruction. Two juveniles were booked into the Marietta Regional Youth Detention Center and faced allegations including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of THC. Additional juveniles were charged with offenses including theft by taking, obstruction, and hit-and-run, and were released to parents or guardians.

Law enforcement officials said they plan to have ample resources available and closely monitor activities around locations flagged in online posts.

Mall officials characterized the curfew as temporary and said they do not intend for the supervision requirement to become routine. The approach mirrors youth-supervision policies adopted at other large retail and entertainment centers nationwide in response to sudden, coordinated gatherings that can strain security staffing and spill into surrounding parking and traffic areas.

Police also said they are tracking chatter about another planned gathering at Six Flags Over Georgia scheduled for Saturday, March 14. For the weekend, officials urged families to discuss plans and expectations, while emphasizing that visitors can enjoy area venues as long as conduct remains orderly and property is respected.
