City Notice: Extreme Cold Advisories and Downtown Transit Reroutes

Official Public Notice: Winter Weather State of Emergency
As of Sunday, February 1, 2026, Governor Brian P. Kemp has declared a statewide State of Emergency in response to a major winter storm moving through the region. This order remains in effect through February 6, 2026. Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel as wintry precipitation and extreme cold temperatures continue to impact road conditions across metro Atlanta. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is actively prioritizing the treatment of interstates and high-traffic routes to ensure access for emergency vehicles and first responders.
Public Health Advisory: Extreme Cold Warning
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for North and Central Georgia, including the city of Atlanta, effective until 1:00 p.m. today. Wind chills are expected to remain in the single digits or fall below zero throughout the morning hours. Public health officials advise all residents to stay indoors. If you must go outside, wear multiple layers of dry, loose-fitting clothing. Residents are also reminded to take precautions to prevent burst pipes by allowing faucets to drip and keeping cabinet doors open to allow heat circulation. The City of Atlanta has opened emergency warming centers for those in need of shelter; residents can contact ATL311 for specific location details and availability.
