Official Winter Weather Advisory: Ice Storm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for the City of Atlanta and surrounding North Georgia areas, effective through Monday, January 26, 2026. Significant ice accumulations between 0.25 and 1 inch are expected, accompanied by wind gusts up to 35 mph. City officials and emergency management agencies are advising all residents to stay off the roads as travel is currently considered impossible due to widespread icing. Hazardous conditions are expected to persist throughout Sunday, January 25, as temperatures remain at or below freezing.

MARTA Inclement Weather Service Plan

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has activated its inclement weather service plan for Sunday, January 25, 2026. Transit services are operating on the following restricted schedule:

  • Rail Service: All trains are running at 20-minute intervals. The Red Line is operating between North Springs and Lindbergh Center only. The Green Line is running between Bankhead and Vine City.
  • Bus Service: Regular bus service is suspended. Only "lifeline" routes are operating to provide access to medical facilities. These include routes 6, 8, 19, 40, 107, 110, 111, 123, 185, and 196.
  • Streetcar: Service is operating via shuttle vans on a Saturday schedule.

Fulton County and City Facility Closures

In response to the deteriorating weather conditions, several public facilities have adjusted their hours of operation:

  • Animal Services: The Fulton County Animal Services Facility is closed to the public today, Sunday, January 25, and will remain closed through Monday.
  • Government Offices: All Fulton County government centers, libraries, and senior centers will be closed on Monday, January 26.
  • Road Closures: The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has closed all I-75 and I-85 express lanes in both directions. These will remain closed until inspections confirm the roadways are clear of ice.

State of Emergency and Consumer Protection

Governor Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency for all 159 Georgia counties in anticipation of continued winter weather impacts. This declaration triggers the state’s price gouging statutes, which remain in effect through January 29, 2026. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious increases in the price of essential goods—including fuel, food, and lodging—to the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. Additionally, the Atlanta Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA) has opened local warming centers for those in need of shelter from the extreme cold.
