Winter Storm Emergency: Travel and Safety Advisory

The City of Atlanta and the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) have issued a high-priority travel advisory as a major winter storm moves through the metro area this Thursday, January 22, 2026. Residents are strongly urged to stay off the roads as freezing rain and ice accumulation have made many thoroughfares, particularly side streets and bridges, hazardous or impassable. GDOT has deployed nearly 2,000 workers and 400 snow removal trucks to treat interstates with brine and salt mixtures. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should maintain a full gas tank and carry an emergency roadside kit containing blankets, flashlights, and traction supplies.
