Morning: Snowfall Intensifies and Travel Conditions Deteriorate

Atlanta awoke this Saturday, January 31, 2026, to a rapidly developing winter weather emergency. Snow began falling across North Georgia in the early morning hours, reaching the Interstate 20 corridor around 6:00 AM. Meteorologists report that the period between 7:00 AM and 1:00 PM will see the heaviest snowfall of the day. For downtown Atlanta, accumulations are expected to range between 1 and 2 inches, while eastern suburbs like Lawrenceville and Decatur could see between 3 and 5 inches. Temperatures this morning are hovering around a frigid 24°F, with wind chills already dipping into the low teens, making for hazardous conditions for any early commuters.

Afternoon: Blustery Winds and Plummeting Temperatures

As the primary snow band begins to taper off in the mid-afternoon, the danger shifts from precipitation to extreme cold. High temperatures for the day will struggle to reach 27°F, far below seasonal averages. Strong northwesterly wind gusts of up to 35 mph are expected to persist throughout the afternoon, creating significant blowing snow and reducing visibility on major thoroughfares. These gusty conditions will push the wind chill down to a bone-chilling 8°F by midday. Residents are advised that travel will be difficult to impossible, particularly on bridges and overpasses where black ice is expected to form immediately upon any snow melt.

Evening and Overnight: Extreme Cold Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the entire metro area, effective from 7:00 PM tonight through Sunday afternoon. By 6:00 PM, actual air temperatures will drop to roughly 18°F, with the wind chill plunging to near 3°F. Overnight, the mercury is projected to fall to a low of 14°F, though wind chills could reach as low as -5°F. This level of cold is life-threatening for those without adequate shelter and presents a severe risk of burst pipes for homeowners. Snow showers may linger in far eastern Georgia, but the primary threat for the city will be the historic freeze.

Emergency Closures and Safety Notices

Governor Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency, which remains in effect through February 6. Due to the severity of the storm, major city attractions including the Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, and the Atlanta Botanical Garden are closed today. Braves Fest at Truist Park has also been canceled. Officials from the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency urge residents to stay indoors and keep pets inside. If you must go outside, dress in multiple layers and cover all exposed skin to prevent frostbite, which can occur in less than 30 minutes under these conditions.
