Atlanta Political Activity Resumes Following Holiday

Following the Presidents’ Day holiday, government activity in Atlanta has accelerated today, Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The city is seeing a busy schedule of committee hearings, municipal board meetings, and active floor sessions at the Georgia State Capitol. Key discussions today center on long-term urban planning, neighborhood reinvestment, and statewide legislative priorities as the General Assembly nears its mid-session milestones.

City Council Committees and Municipal Boards

The Atlanta City Council’s Community Development and Human Services Committee is leading today’s municipal agenda. The committee is holding its first-quarter Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) Amendments Public Hearing. This session, which runs throughout the day, allows for public testimony regarding proposed changes to the city’s master plan for growth and land use. These amendments are critical for aligning neighborhood development with the city’s current housing and infrastructure goals.

In addition to the CDP hearing, other municipal bodies are convening today:

  • Water and Sewer Appeals Board: Scheduled to meet at 4:00 p.m. to review residential and commercial appeals regarding utility services.
  • ADA Advisory Committee: The Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee is holding a public session to discuss accessibility improvements across city facilities.
  • Office of the Inspector General: The Governing Board is meeting to review ongoing oversight and ethics reports.

Georgia General Assembly: Legislative Day 19

Across the street from City Hall, the Georgia General Assembly is convening for Legislative Day 19 of the 2026 session. Both the House and Senate held floor sessions starting at 7:00 a.m., moving toward the critical "Crossover Day" deadline next month. Several committees with high impact on Atlanta are meeting throughout the day:

  • House Rules Committee: Setting the calendar for upcoming floor votes on high-priority bills.
  • Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities: Reviewing legislation that could impact the city’s transit and energy infrastructure.
  • House Judiciary Non-Civil: Discussing updates to the state’s criminal justice and public safety statutes.

Today also marks a significant advocacy event as the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) hosts its annual day at the Capitol, bringing educators from across the metro area to meet with lawmakers regarding school funding and literacy initiatives.

Neighborhood Reinvestment and Economic Development

The Neighborhood Reinvestment Initiative Commission (NRIC) is holding a virtual community hearing this evening. This initiative, a cornerstone of Mayor Andre Dickens’ second-term agenda, seeks to direct resources toward underserved communities to improve quality of life and youth outcomes. Simultaneously, Invest Atlanta is hosting a virtual Q&A session for small business owners at 6:00 p.m., focusing on providing resources and support for local entrepreneurs ahead of major upcoming global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
