A school community gathers as an investigation moves into the courts

An Atlanta charter school is set to hold a memorial ceremony Tuesday, March 10, for 7-year-old first-grader Zoey Price, who was killed in a shooting at her family’s home late last month. The event is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and will include the unveiling of a dedicated reading area created in her memory.

School leaders have described the space as a “happy corner” designed as a quiet place for students to read and reflect. Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington Jr. is scheduled to speak during the ceremony. Zoey was also involved in cheerleading and youth sports, and adults who worked with her have said she was active in school life.

What is known about the Feb. 24 shooting

Zoey was shot on Feb. 24, 2026, at an apartment on the 2200 block of Tiger Flowers Drive NW. Atlanta police said officers were dispatched at about 9:49 p.m. to a report of two people shot. Zoey’s mother, a 44-year-old woman, was also injured and taken to the hospital. Police officials have said she was expected to survive.

In the initial hours after the shooting, authorities described the case as stemming from a dispute among people who knew one another. Investigators later alleged the gunfire followed a verbal argument over the phone involving Zoey’s teenage brother.

Arrests announced as investigators outline alleged sequence of events

Two teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with Zoey’s death: Preston Smith (born November 2006) and Steven Richardson (born January 2009). Police said warrants for Smith were secured Feb. 26, 2026. Richardson surrendered Feb. 27, 2026, and Smith surrendered March 2, 2026. A police announcement issued March 3, 2026, listed multiple charges for both, including murder and criminal attempt to commit murder, along with aggravated assault and firearm-related counts.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities have emphasized that information released publicly is preliminary and may change as evidence is reviewed and the prosecution proceeds.

Community remembrance alongside renewed focus on youth safety

A vigil held March 2 at the Dunbar Recreation Center brought together family members, teammates and neighbors, reflecting the reach of Zoey’s activities beyond the classroom. Tuesday’s school ceremony extends that remembrance into a daily, student-centered setting through a permanent space tied to literacy and learning.
